New Build Project

The trust’s current inpatient units are not fit for purpose. The primary care trusts of Lancashire carried out a consultation exercise in 2006 about how mental health services should be provided in the future. Following this it was recommended that the trust should replace its current wards with four purpose built units. Click to read the consultation and the recommendations made.

The trust has prepared a Strategic Outline Case (SOC) which was approved by the North West Strategic Health Authority (SHA) in November 2007.

This sets out the trust’s exciting proposals for the new facilities including smaller wards and single bedrooms that preserve the privacy and dignity of people who use services, and have accessible garden areas. The picture on the left gives an example of what a bedroom on a modern unit could look like.

There will be one new inpatient unit in East Lancashire, one in Central Lancashire and two in North Lancashire (one in the Lancaster and Morecambe area and one on the Fylde Coast.) Everyone from people who use the trust's services, carers and advocates to the trust’s partners, staff and members of the public were invited to have their say on where these units should be built. Eight public meetings took place across Lancashire during October and November 2007 for people to give their views to the trust on the list of possible sites. Click here for information about the public meetings.

A further meeting was held in November 2008 which looked at further sites in East Lancashire as the preferred selected site from the first engagement meeting had planning complications and other options had to be explored. Click here for further information.

Following this extensive engagement process the trust identified its preferred sites for the building of these new units. The next major decision will be about which site should be built first.

The first bricks are expected to be laid in about three years' time. The picture on the left shows what a model mental health unit can look like. The trust will work to ensure that the new units blend in with the existing environment. The entire programme will take at least 10 years to implement. Before this happens the trust has to complete Business Cases that will include detailed costed plans for each unit to be developed.

The trust is proud to be working with BDP Architects. Clinical reference groups are being set up and will work alongside BDP to ensure that key people continue to be involved in the design process to ensure that the unit meets everyone’ needs.
